The Gift from the Sea

"I have lived most of my life near the sea and my husband a fisherman has brought me many a gift from its waters including our primary source of sustenance as well as incredible objects in the form of shells and bits of coral.

After years working as an artist, my subject matter has come to rest on sea forms. I am beguiled by these shell objects; their bizarre and colorful forms intrigue and inspire and reach through 500 million years of design and history.

Sea shells are physically small, but are truly larger than life through their beauty, dynamic appendages and mysterious passageways. All is part of the symbolism. The form represents a safe place; a shelter. Its design is that of grace and strength and though shaped by the sea its interior houses soft and delicate life. The shell is metaphoric: How do I live a grounded life within the present and immense contradictions of our time?
It is, in the end the acknowledgement that there is more; and chances conspire in a physical and intellectual process within the painting.

The felt pressures of our day and the tools that I have to work with release the image, then in the final configuration I have entered the mystery, the end result is that everything belongs, that is the form."
